Math and Magic in Wonderland eBook Lilac Mohr

This is a wonderful and unusual book. The story follows the adventures of witty twin sisters on their journey into an imaginary world, but there is a twist: in each step they need to solve some words, logic or math puzzles that will open the door into the next adventures. Throughout this journey, the twins (and the readers) learn about math, science, classic poetry, history and literature. It is rare to find a book that is not only an educational tool to encourage youngsters to love math and science, but at the same time a book that is simply a joy to read for all ages (adults who feared math all their life are warned that, God forbids, they may rediscover the fun of it…). This book is a modern version of “Alice in Wonderland” (it has been clearly inspired by the writing of Lewis Carroll), but it is also an activity book (it has puzzles for the reader to solve at the end of each chapter, with solutions at the end of the book). The book is written in a very rich language (admittedly, I had to use the dictionary a few times…) full of humor, puns, and tongue twisters that will spin your head. Some parts are gems that are so funny and smartly written that they made me laugh out loud. My favorite part is the description of the interaction between the two girls - they continuously teasing and challenging each other throughout their journey and sure to inspire other girls to be interested in math and science. In summary, the book will provide enrichment for young readers covering a wide range of subjects. Educators and parents who wants their children to be creative thinkers and problem solvers will get from this book tons of ideas for further projects to do with their kids and likely enjoy reading it themselves. This book can provide a summer-long activity for kids.

Math and Magic in Wonderland eBook Lilac Mohr Reviews

This book is really good. I read it to my homeschooled daughter. It has great riddles and historical information and interesting vocabulary weaved throughout the story.
My 11 year old son read the book this afternoon and the first thing he said was 'this book is so good, I can't wait to read the sequel'.

I have just begun reading this book with my 7 year old daughter and she is captivated and wants to keep going. The language of the book is rich and equally rich is the content. I am so glad I bumped into this book. We need more people who promote math and knowledge the way this author has. There are no boundaries for learning. You can learn anything that you want to as long as you put your heart to it.

The book was to arrive tonight and it did get delivered by afternoon. The only complaint I have is that the condition in which the book was delivered. The back pages and the end cover page is folded, making it feel like a used book.

All in all I am a happy customer.
It's nice to finally find a children's book where the main characters are smart. Nothing in this book is "dumbed down" for kids. The language is rich and the math is presented in an interesting way. The actual problems don't require a lot of math background (maybe some multiplication, but a calculator can be used). They will get children using their brains, though. Parents will like it too... a book to read to the kids without being bored to death!
Mathematics and Love - The book is an incredible story for learning mathematics. When I search my own love of mathematics from my childhood, I find such a vast inclusion of those concepts in this book. It is great to have a compilation of concepts to share with my son. The author steadily advances the concepts with each chapter to go along with the development of child characters that are impossible not to love.

The book covers concepts for early learners but draws deeply on fundamentals of areas of graph theory, algebra, geometry (shape construction), and equations. It is a perfect story telling for learners that like to solve riddles and logic puzzles. All of the concepts of mathematics that should be introduced to learners that combine interesting characters with ways to solve problems. I liked the fusion of math with poetry as well as learning background on historical figures of mathematics and science.

My 5 year old listens to the story of the two girls, Lulu and Elizabeth as they adventure into a wonderful world. Each chapter includes more puzzles and exercises that can serve for off-story practice. The book is a great and I will reference back to the chapters time and time with my son.

If the story's characters, Lulu and Elizabeth, explore further adventures, it would make for a great children's series that I will enjoy and share with my son.
My 10-year-old ate this up in a week and is now enjoying a reread with me and his little brother, who is 7. It's such a playful, magical story filled with classical references that will pique a child's interest. I first heard about this book as a "math classic" from a facebook group of parents who love A Thomas Jefferson Education. I didn't buy it immediately, however. It wasn't until my sister started raving about it, how she had received it in the mail and that night started reading to my nephews and how they loved it so much and were excitedly gathering "points" as they solved problems at the end of each chapter - then I bought it. Since then, it has been read by my son, a neighbor girl who the following week recited up to 30 digits of Pi after the decimal, and like I said, we are currently reading it aloud with my 7-yr-old. If you want more like The Phantom Tollbooth or Grammar-land, this book is your next logical buy. It is delightful, educational fun!
