Weird as it working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie’s always thought of herself as normal. Sure her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours, but still. Normal.Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie’s dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.
So much for normal.
Evellyn, Evie-for short, was an orphan found wandering around in a park at the age of three and whisked off to the International Paranormal Containment Agency (IPCA). It is there that it is discovered she can see through the glamour of every type of paranormal creature. She is then put to the IPCA’s use, tracking, tagging, and bagging all sorts of paranormals.
When the center is broken into by a mysterious Water Boy, it is then that Evie discovers she’s not quite the normal human she thought she was. Why the secrecy of her heritage and the intense behavior of her faerie ex-boyfriend? Only Evie has the power and resources to help try and protect those around her and those she was trained to track down.
This is a fantastically spun faerie-tale for young adults (and those of us that aren’t quite that young anymore). Evie is a 16 year old teenager that is employed by a paranormal agency because sees paranormal beings for what they really are and not what they portray on the outside for mortals to see. She longs for a normal life but knows very well that fantasy can't become a reality; Or can it? She spends most of the book trying to figure out who or what is gunning for paranormals across the globe and finds out more than she expects.

Paranormalcy Kiersten White Books Reviews
I enjoyed this story and, for the most part, the characters. Evie started off really kick ass and strong, but kind of devolved along the way. I found her lack of knowledge about the world she lives in to be completely unbelievable. I mean, she's never read a book or seen a movie? How do you not know there are two fairy courts? I also thought it was odd that Reth just wasn't more upfront with Evie about what he wanted. He probably could've talked her into whatever it was. Those gripes aside, it was a very entertaining read. I'm interested in reading the next in the series to clear up some unsolved mysteries.
Paranormalcy was a decent book. The characters are interesting and the plot has promise. However, it felt like the book was trying to be too much. There was not only the paranormal aspect, but there was a lot of teen attitude. I had a bit of an issue with Evie, but overall the book was better that I thought it would be.
Evie works to contain and control paranormal beings. She can see through their glamours to what they really are, something no other person can do. She's grown up in a world of the supernatural; not much surprises her anymore. After years of semi-peaceful existence, things are changing. An unknown being broke into the IPCA headquarters and paranormals are being killed off. The intruder won't speak of his reasons for breaking in and the IPCA can't figure out how the beings are being killed. Everything Evie has grown up with is changing and being put to the test.
Lend, the love interest, has his moments. He's not the most swoon-worthy character I've read, but he did come across as a normal teenager. He had sweet moments, cheesy moments...everything you'd expect a normal teen boy to have. I especially enjoyed his insecurity about his true self. It was refreshing to read about a male character that wasn't the perfectly confident teen. I've never met one of those. Instead, he puts on a front of confidence, but the moments when his guard came down were the best. They made him real.
Evie is the one that I struggled with. Putting aside some of her characteristics that I find annoying in any person, her strength was what bothered me. She started out pretty fearless, taking on challenges and figuring her way out of tough spots. Then she became a little too whiny for my tastes. Instead of fighting back like I would have liked her to, she put aside her feelings as to not anger the people around her, but the internal whining was a bit much. Near the end, her fight came back, but it was a little too late for her to be fully redeemed in my opinion.
Paranormalcy is a fine paranormal book and a decent teen novel. It just has a difficult time bringing the two halves together in a way that works and flows well. I'm not sure if this will be a series I continue, but if you really enjoy the paranormal novels, this would probably be a good book to pick up.
This was a fun quick read with an interesting paranormal concept at its heart. Evelyn is a 'human' who can see through paranormal's glamours, and as such she's a top notch agent for the IPCA. However, she longs for the normality, as represented by her favourite high-school soap drama, Easton Heights. When paranormals start dying left and right, Evelyn is drawn into the chaos as it's ultimately her friends who are at risk. All of this occurs with a cute girl meets boy subplot.
Evie has a very cute, clearly teenage voice--literally "bleeping" where other teenagers might swear. The dialogue is perfect for a very young audience or someone like me who likes to escape being a "grown up" and remember those butterflies that fluttered when you wondered if every hand movement meant something else.
Character depth isn't the aim of this story. People die and a tear or two is shed, but readers can continue to enjoy the story without too much emotional attachment or devastation. So, the superficial characters have their advantages in this case as it helps to create a very quick, enjoyable and escapist read.
I'm not in love with this series, but I did purchase #2 within an hour or two of finishing #1 last night, and will begin reading it right now. Now, whether this speaks to my issues about completing something or if it's because I really and truly enjoy the series, only time will tell.
