Wow. I've stated in previous novella reviews that most novellas aren't that great to me, but this one (along with a few others) is changing that for me! In this novella we get two perspectives: Day's first kiss & June's first day at Drake University. Everything occurs before the events of Legend & they're intriguing.

I can't recall if I said this before, but Day has always seemed like a shallow character; not shallow like he only values beauty--shallow like he isn't characterized much. I understand that has a need to help those in needs, but in his portion of this story it seems like it could be told even without him. That being said, Day's portion is plot-driven; not character driven.

June's my favorite! Her portion of this novella's fully fleshed out, is filled with her spot on banter, & was such a joy to read! I smiled during the entirety of it. I found myself rooting for June, loving her for being so strange, & holding firm to her beliefs. I loved how she was so strong, yet so vulnerable, but not in the typical YA way.

Overall, this book is MORE than worth the $2.99 I paid for it!

As short as these two stories are, they do an excellent job of showing both sides of the June/Day equation. Day's rebellious streak is strong despite his injury. He's wary and fierce in the face of the Republic's stranglehold and he's unwilling to put those around him in danger. June is just as rebellious - she just rebels in a different way than Day does. She's trying to fit in but her age and her uncanny abilities put her head and shoulders above those she's going to school with. She doesn't fit in, where Day doesn't want to fit in.

Honestly, these snippets revved my interest in this series back up like WHOA. Because Day and June are kinda awesome and with their big, scary brains they can do most anything.

I really enjoyed these stories. I thought they were a fun, interesting little perspective on how Day and June lived before the events in Legend. There are two short anecdotes here, one about Day and one about June, from when they were 12 years old.

Day
For Day, we get the story of his first kiss. He's been out on the streets by himself for about two years now, just trying to survive. He was trying to steal food from a crate, when he gets caught by the 16-year-old daughter of the owner of the crates. She offers to let him come work in exchange for some food--and a kiss. The story was short and sweet, and and gave us some insight into Day's life on the streets. It shows us how much Day would do for his friends (although we already knew that from Legend). It also shows us Day's vulnerability, and how much he longs for friends, a family, stability. It was just an all-around cute story. (Although, am I the only one weirded about by the fact that a 16-year-old kissed a 12-year-old??)

June
For June, we get the story of her first day at Drake University. June is the first person ever to be admitted to Drake at the age of twelve. Being a prodigy, the Republic has their eye on her. June has skipped many grades before, and has never really made any friends. All she wants is some friends, but she really doesn't know how to go about making any, since she and her fellow classmates are so different. This results in a sort of showing off that June does, but if anything, it does the opposite of what she wants. On her first day of school, she is provoked by a sophomore, which results in her first discipline. This story gives us insight into her character, and foreshadows what is to come in the Legend series.

I also like the way that the author weaves their stories together before they even know it. Day sees announcements of June's induction into Drake as the Republic's prodigy. June is late for her first day because of the accident Day causes. Even in Legend, there were some of these instances that their paths crossed without them realizing it. All in all, this was a nice little introduction to the two characters before their story in Legend. It was short, sweet, and very enjoyable to read.
Taking place three years before Legend, more specifically the days centered around June’s admittance to Drake University, Life Before Legend provides readers with a peek into the separate, yet irrevocably entwined, lives of June and Day before their stories really intersect each other.

Day’s story chronicles his first kiss, but also some enlightening events that provide the foundation for the streetwise rebel/vigilante he’ll eventually become. We’re also introduced to an interesting character from Day’s past that I’m crossing my fingers we’ll meet again (as I have yet to read both Prodigy and Champion, it’s entirely possible this person has made a reappearance, but… I have yet to find this out).

June’s story was probably my favorite of the two. The girl is the poster child for the word “precocious.” I loved this look at twelve year old June — confident in her intellect and knowledge, determined to be the best, but a little… lost. She doesn’t quite fit in anywhere, and the short gives a basis as to why her years at Drake were a tad tumultuous.

Overall, while not a necessary piece of the plot, these two companion short stories are a must-read for readers who appreciate a little additional character building.
