I would actually give this book 3.5 stars but as there is no option for that I have rounded it up to four. I love a fast paced detective novel. “Lot 28″ takes us back to the private dicks of yesteryear, set in the 1950s on a Hollywood film lot. This novel would make a great movie…lots a of memorable characters with interesting (albeit cliche) personalities. However, this needs work as a novel. I’m assuming it was meant to be a novella, as it is way too short for status of a novel. There definitely needs to be more buildup to the murder in order to get the reader to really care “who done it”. While the characters themselves are vibrant, you don’t really get a good look at them or a feel for what they’re about. Also, I understand that it’s supposed to be set in the 50s, but the slang seemed to be a bit overused. I doubt one would say they were going to “drop a dime” to the cops on “the squawk box” while staring at a murdered body. Nice effort, just falls a bit short of a great book for me.

Florida author Garrett W Pomichter, born in New York, is a graduate of Florida Air Academy and Eastern Florida State College, and having served as a U.S. Army veteran he now couples professional journalism and political marketing, public and media relations specialist with writing and the depth of his experiences show in this fine brief novel.

There is something about film noir that still stimulates both filmmakers and writers to recreate the particular moody atmosphere of life in Los Angeles in the 1950s. Pomichter pulls this off like a pro in LOT 28 Book 2 of his successful Lucky Marks Mysteries.

From page one he finds the core of this genre and from there carries it forward with great ease `“Good morning, Mr. Marks,” the security guard at the front gate of the studio barked as Will drove through in his yellow convertible. “Heya Harry,” Will replied with a wave, nodding his head upward as he passed by. Will drove his car slowly between the giant, airplane hanger-sized buildings that lined the narrow roadways. In each, it gave him a chuckle to think, movie stars and great directors used all their skills to create dreams that would soon flicker onto silver screens all around the country. He nodded and waved at stage hands and set workers as he passed by, rocking and swaying, singing along with Teresa Brewer on the car radio. Will fancied himself the real life embodiment of Bogart’s Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe. He knew his life was far from as exciting. He spent most of his early career tracking down cheating husbands and welching gamblers. But that didn’t stop him from enjoying the image that such characters promoted. He was pretty sure that mystery was a large part of how he’d attracted the studio as a client in the first place. His job for Arcane Pacific Pictures was hardly any sexier then any of his marital clients, but the money was a lot steadier. Pomichter stays on top of his game, collecting all the slang and phrases we associate with that era and building a story that holds enough of the era's humor to balance the tension. He is an author to watch. Grady Harp, August 15
Let me start by saying the main thing that attracted me to this book is it’s set in the early 50’s and has that allure to it-- you know the day’s when iconic actors such as Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, and William Powell, to name a few, where memorizing use this their roles on the big screen—women swooned and men wanted to be them.
The story of a promiscuous, vulgar, hateful, bigot of a Director Allister Walters, America’s little sweetheart actress Maggie Myers, and a hard nose P.I Will Marks (Lucky), comes to life in this thrilling, roller-coaster of a who done it book that leaves you guessing to the very end.
Will Marks is hired by the studio to watch over Maggie and find out if the disturbing rumors going around the studio are true—the last thing the studio needs is for the trashy rumors to get out in the Media and tarnish their image. However, Will Marks wasn’t expecting to get drug into a murder. Allister Walters is found dead on the set of his newest film everyone’s a suspect and Will Marks intends of finding out who killed the director come hell or high water. But it will blow your mind when you find out who the killer is—shocking and unexpected!
